"Cieche tenebre" is an aria from the opera Pompeo Magno (also Il Pompeo Magno) by Francesco Cavalli and a libretto by Nicolò Minato. The opera premiered at the Teatro San Salvatore in Venice on 20 February 1666.[2]

Context

Sesto is in love with Issicratea, the Queen of Ponto – and he mustn't show it. Finally wanting to confess his love, he begs the shadows to aid his plan.
