Ancient Italian

Recitativo
Ferma, ascolta, e festeggia.
Al divin soglio
Giunsero fortunati i voti tuoi,
Se col vago candore
De' tuoi saggi pensieri
Sapesti innamorar l'eterno Amore.

Aria
Amar senza penar
non è da invitto cor
che brama il Cielo.

Saprà ben consolar
Le smanie del dolor
Il tuo bel zelo.

Modernized Italian

Ferma, ascolta, e festeggia!
Al divin soglio
Giunsero fortunati i voti tuoi,
Se col vago candore
De' tuoi saggi pensieri
Sapesti innamorar l'eterno Amore.

Aria
Amar senza penar
non è da invitto cor
che brama il Cielo.

Saprà ben consolar
Le smanie del dolor
Il tuo bel zelo.

Recitativo
Ferma, listen and rejoice!
Your lucky vows have reached
the divine throne.
As with the beautiful candour
of your prudent thoughts,
you knew to enamour eternal love.

Aria
Loving without suffering
Is not what Heaven demands
From an undefeated heart

You will know well
To soothe the pains
With you great zeal.[2]

Annotations

"Amar senza penar" appears in the 1717 version[1]. Whether it is also part of the 1715 version has yet to be confirmed. In the version printed in 1723[3], there have been considerable text changes. The introductory line of the angel seems to be missing, and the text is as follows:

Angelo
Recitativo
Ferma dall'alto soglio
Penetraron le sfere i tuoi sospiri,
Se col vago candore
De' tuoi puri pensieri
Sapesti innamorar l'istesso Amore.

Aria
Amar senza penar
Non è da invitto cor,
Che brama il Cielo.

Saprà ben consolar
L'aspetto del dolor
Ogni tuo zelo.
