"Abendempfindung", also known by its dedication, "Abendempfindung, an Laura", is a song by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a poem by Joachim Heinrich Campe. A premonition of the protagonist's own death it still ends on a serene note: the fond memories of the friends who remain to grieve are presented as a font of consolation.
According to some scholars[3], the symbolism is deeply Freemason; the poet Campe is also said to have belonged to this exclusive circle. Also, the publication coincides with the last letter to Wolfgang's father Leopold Mozart that transports a similar sentiment.[4]
The dedication "To Laura" – once probably mis-spelt as "to Lana"[5], has little if nothing to do with Mozart.
